Choosing a Lens for Wedding Photography - Canon

We get asked this all the time, 'What lenses do you recommend, I'm shooting a wedding?'

Well here's list for you photographers out there whether you want to hire them or buy them.  Here's a selection of lenses for Canon users that most professional wedding photographers use, a Nikon article will follow.

Canon Standard Zooms Lenses

Canon EF 24-70mm 2.8 USM - Most Popular

Canon EF 24-105mm F4 L IS II USM

These two lenses are most sought after for weddings, previous iterations of these lenses including 3rd party brands such as Sigma, Tamron and Tokina are also good depending on your budget and requirmenets.  Here are some 1.6 crop APS-C recommedations:

Canon EF-s 17-55mm 2.8 IS USM

This is a great alternative for those crop bodies that will accept the EF-s mount this will give you an effective focal length range of approximately 27-88mm (35 mm equivalent) and with IS (Image Stabalization) this is a winner.

Canon Telephoto Zooms

Canon EF 70-200mm 2.8 IS USM II - Most Popular

This is a very popular choice, very fast lens great for those intimate shots without intruding on the scene. Any of the variants of the 70-200mm @ 2.8 will do the job.

Canon EF 28-300mm F/3.5-5.6 L IS USM

This is a very flexible lens not the fastest lens it has to be said, but it's good for those that need the range as it gives you a wide to telephoto in one.

Canon Wide-Angle Zooms

Canon EF 16-35mm 2.8 L II USM - Most Popular

This is a great super fast ultra wide angle zoom, we would highly recommend using this with a full frame body such as the 5D/1Ds Series for the full effect otherwise it could be used on a crop body at an equivalent of (25.6-56mm) in conjunction with a standard lens listed above except for the Canon EF-s 17-55mm 2.8 IS USM as it covers a similar range.

Canon EF 17-40mm F4 L USM

Like the 16-35mm although not as fast we and a lot lighter would highly recommend using this with a full frame body such as the 5D/1Ds Series for the full effect, otherwise it could be used on a crop body at an equivalent of (27.2-64mm) in conjunction with a standard lens listed above except for the Canon EF-s 17-55mm 2.8 IS USM as it covers a similar range.

Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM

This is the Ultra Wide solution for the crop AP-C sensor/EF-s mount compliant bodies, it will give those a 35mm equivalent of (16-35mm)

Tokina 11-16mm ATX Pro F2.8 DX

This is the Ultra Wide Super Fast solution for the crop AP-C sensor compliant bodies (35mm equivalent of (17.6-25.6mm), it is also compliant with the 1D Series AP-H sensor with slight vignetting at the wider end until about 13mm it will give those a clear 35mm equivalent of 17mm on the wider end @ 2.8 you can't complain.
